Here is an experience I had while using BLD Ekelmans' services: A context: I've contacted this law firm to review a work related agreement document. I've mentioned my budget for a consultation in the initial reach out email as well. The lawyer did not comment about the budget (though they did mentioned their rate, though it was strange how the former was omitted to be mentioned then), accepted the case, provided guidance/advice and sent an invoice for their services a few months later. The invoice was for an amount of triple of the budget, which came as a big surprise to say the least. Pros: Thanks to the lawyer's advice it was revealed that the work related agreement document contained a calculation error. With that insight, the final (corrected) figure was more beneficial for me. For this I'm thankful to the lawyer. Cons: The lawyer has failed to communicate: 1. The budget consideration at the initial stage prior to accepting the case 2. Going above the budget at the very first day of the case As a result the cost of the consultation ended up being way above the budget (though the lawyer did reduced the initial amount by a few hundreds to avoid disputing the matter further, it accounted to about a double of the initial budget in the end) Lessons learnt: As a potential client, do your own diligence and make sure the budget for lawyer's services is agreed and locked in prior to the lawyer accepting your case. And if a budget is not bound for some case-specific reason, make sure to agree with a lawyer to be transparent when billing hours. So that you you won’t end up in the same situation like I did 🙂
